Lutheran Towers Launches Nourishing Souls Campaign to Strengthen Spiritual Wellness for Seniors

Lutheran Towers officially launched its highly anticipated Nourishing Souls Campaign on Sunday, May 11, during the annual Lutheran Towers Sunday celebration in partnership with the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

This two-year initiative marks a significant milestone in the organization’s commitment to whole-person wellness by addressing one of the most essential, yet often under-supported, components of senior well-being: spiritual wellness. The campaign is centered on the creation and sustainability of a community chaplaincy program designed to serve the residents of Lutheran Towers with compassionate spiritual care and emotional support.

“This campaign is about more than just providing services, it’s about creating a sacred space for our residents to feel heard, supported, and spiritually connected throughout all stages of life,“ said Nicole Porter, Business Services Manager at Lutheran Towers. “A dedicated chaplain will play a vital role in fostering that sense of belonging and holistic well-being.“

The launch event took place in the Sims Atrium, where attendees were invited to meet with residents and staff to learn more about the campaign and its anticipated impact. Informational displays and conversations highlighted the role of spiritual care in aging well, and guests were encouraged to consider making a pledge to support the program.

Lutheran Towers has long championed a wellness model grounded in eight dimensions: physical, emotional, social, intellectual, environmental, financial, occupational, and now, through this campaign, spiritual. The Nourishing Souls Campaign seeks to ensure that every resident has access to personal spiritual guidance, prayer, group services, and moments of reflection led by a compassionate and certified chaplain.

Community support is key to the campaign’s success. Donations will directly fund the chaplain’s presence and programming, including grief support groups, memorial services, and one-on-one spiritual counseling.

“With the help of our generous supporters, we can continue walking in faith alongside our residents,“ said Executive Director Karon Nixon. “This is how we uplift lives and nourish souls.“

Lutheran Towers Hosts Volunteer Appreciation “Casino Night” to Celebrate Community Champions

On Saturday, April 26, Lutheran Towers rolled out the red carpet—and the roulette wheel—for a very special evening honoring the incredible volunteers who help make our mission possible.

Our annual Volunteer Appreciation Event was a joyful celebration of the resident volunteers, community supporters, and generous individuals who give their time, energy, and resources to help our residents age well in place with dignity, support, and joy.

This year’s event embraced a fun and festive theme, Casino Night, bringing a lively atmosphere to our community. Residents and guests joined in on classic games like blackjack, craps, and roulette, using play money to try their luck and enjoy the excitement. Laughter, smiles, and cheers filled the room as everyone came together for an evening of connection and celebration.

More than just a night of games, this event was a heartfelt tribute to the people who make a difference at Lutheran Towers. Our volunteers, whether they are residents themselves, members of the broader community, or donors, play an essential role in enriching the lives of those we serve. Their selfless contributions help us continue to fulfill our mission each day.

Lutheran Towers staff took time during the evening to personally recognize and thank our volunteers, expressing deep gratitude for all they do.
It was a night to remember, filled with appreciation, community spirit, and a shared commitment to supporting older adults in living vibrant, meaningful lives.

Our 50th Anniversary Donor Event held on October 8,2022

On October 8, 2022, major donors gathered at the Ansley Park home of Gail and Barry Spurlock to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Lutheran Towers and to learn of the Live Well*Be Well campaign to raise $100,000 in support of the residents. The Reverend David Donges, former bishop of the South Carolina Synod and Associate Pastor of Redeemer in 1972, told the history of the groundbreaking of the Towers and the vision of the Senior Pastor, the Reverend Robert E. Lee who foresaw the critical need for affordable housing in Atlanta. Live Well*Be Well will support food and nutrition programs and mental and physical wellness initiatives. The actual bridge that connects Redeemer to Lutheran Towers is symbolic of the church’s wish for the residents to not only live safe and securely but also to thrive.

Celebrating Fifty Years of Providing Affordable Housing for Seniors in Midtown Atlanta

Lutheran Towers, a faith-based organization providing clean, safe, and affordable housing for independent, low-income seniors in Atlanta, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Lutheran Towers was first envisioned by the Reverend Doctor Robert E. Lee in the 1960s. Dr. Lee was senior pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer from 1955 until 1978 and was one of eighty Atlanta Pastors to sign the Ministers’ Manifesto in 1957, urging peace and obedience to the law as Atlanta struggled with desegregation. Groundbreaking took place in 1971 and was completed a year later, and for five decades Lutheran Towers has successfully shepherded through a rapidly changing Midtown Atlanta landscape led by its Board and Executive Directors.

Today Lutheran Towers is a community of more than 200 seniors hailing from diverse backgrounds leading active lives in midtown Atlanta. Under the current leadership of the Lutheran Towers Board and staff, the Towers has become the gold standard for low-income independent senior living, serving as a model for others to replicate. Providing more than just housing, the staff and administration provide holistic, person-centered supportive services, and innovative recreational programs. Food insecurity amongst seniors continues to grow in Metro Atlanta and around our nation. Lutheran Towers offers ten different feeding programs including a free resident grocery store empowering its’ residents to thrive. An Award-Winning Free Feeding Program

For 50 years, Lutheran Towers has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for its residents. Towards that end, it offers an array of health and well-being programs as well as recreational activities. In 2018, Lutheran Towers conducted a client needs assessment which found that over 90% of its residents were food insecure.

In response to this finding about the prevalence of food insecurity within their HUD subsidized independent living community, Lutheran Towers leadership launched free onsite feeding programs for its residents starting in 2018. Year over year, the number and type of free feeding programs offered to Lutheran Towers’ residents have grown. In 2021 alone, Lutheran Towers disseminated more than 75,000 pounds of free food to its residents.

In January of 2022, Lutheran Towers launched, the first of its kind in the nation within a HUD subsidized senior independent living community, a “no charge” grocery store for its residents. Lutheran Towers “no charge” grocery store offers both consumable and non-consumable items to its residents. The store allows Lutheran Towers to notably grow its free food dissemination to its residents. To sustain the store, Lutheran Towers secures grants and receives donations from individuals and churches.

In June of 2022, Lutheran Towers’ commitment to eliminating food insecurity within its senior community was recognized by the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services at the 2022 Senior Hunger Summit. Each year, since 2016, the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services has sponsored a Senior Hunger Summit. The 2022 summit covered the five focus areas of the State Plan to Address Senior Hunger (published December 2017).

The Senior Hunger Summit focus areas were today’s seniors, health impact of senior hunger, food access, food waste as well as reclamation and meeting the community needs. The 2022 Senior Hunger Summit brought together a diverse group of experts, policymakers and community stakeholders to heighten awareness of senior hunger in Georgia and nationally, unearth issues accompanying the problem, highlight best practices, and seed opportunities to combat senior hunger.

Lutheran Towers and The Midtown Alliance

In late March of this year, Midtown Alliance decided to recognize Lutheran Towers as one of three member organizations to highlight at its 2022 Annual Business Meeting.

Since its creation in 1978, Midtown Alliance has been one of the driving forces behind the revitalization of Midtown.

It is a non-profit membership organization and a coalition of leading business and community leaders – united in their commitment to Midtown as a premiere destination for commerce, culture, education, and living.

For more than two decades, Lutheran Towers has been a member of the Midtown Alliance. There are over 1,000 members.

We are very fortunate to have been selected to be highlighted at the 2022 Midtown Alliance Annual Business Meeting. It served to help raise our visibility as a leading business in Midtown.

Lutheran Towers Opens No-Charge On-Site Grocery Store in Partnership with Goodr

Goodr is a hunger relief and food waste management company. They offer services to remove barriers to food access. Lutheran Towers has partnered with Goodr for the benefit of our residents. The new Lutheran Towers Goodr Grocery store is a free, easy-access solution for you to shop for groceries.

WHAT:

Lutheran Towers, a HUD subsidized senior independent living community in Atlanta, Georgia, will celebrate the grand opening of its no charge onsite grocery store with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, January 17, 2022.

The first of its kind in the nation, Lutheran Towers no charge grocery store will help to meet the basic needs of the residents in its senior independent living community for low-income persons. This innovative senior anti-hunger initiative will serve to increase access to food for individuals living at Lutheran Towers.

For 50 years, Lutheran Towers has been committed to providing a safe, quality, and affordable home with person-centered supportive services that empowers its residents to thrive. Towards that end, in 2018, we created our first on-site free feeding program, and each year since then, the type of hunger prevention and intervention programs operated by Lutheran Towers and the pounds of food disseminated annually to our residents have grown to more than 75,000 pounds in 2021 alone. With the launch of our onsite grocery, it will notably enhance Lutheran Towers’ capacity to address food insecurity in its 15-story building located in Midtown Atlanta.
